PACKING FOR SOMEONE ELSE
She said ‘my nice pyjamas’.
A man’s guide to packing the hospital bag.
You’ve had the call. You’ve been asked to bring some things in. This sounds simple. It is not simple.
First: find a bag. A proper one. Holdall, weekend bag, small suitcase — something with a zip that can survive being shoved under a hospital bed. Not a Lidl carrier bag. Not a bin liner. You are packing for hospital, not clearing out the garage.
This is not a test of instinct.

If she has named a specific thing, assume she means that exact thing. ‘My blue cardigan’ is not a category. It is a cardigan, it is blue, and she can picture precisely where it is.
If you are standing there holding two candidates and becoming increasingly convinced that either will do: send a photo.
None of this is because you’re hopeless. Packing somebody else’s intimate, ordinary life into a holdall at short notice, while quietly worried about them, is a genuinely impossible task. Bring what she asked for. Photograph the options if you’re stuck. And use a proper bag.
